Story
THE GOAT PROJECT
A new initiative by Rise Africa UK, launched in 2018. The Goat Project has been established to provide poor, struggling families with a milking goat, from which they can earn an income to support their children.
WHY
Rise Africa UK is focused on helping children receive a quality education and making a real difference to their lives. However, so many children are not receiving the basic needs at home to support their education, many go to school hungry having not eaten dinner or breakfast. As a result they cant concentrate properly in the morning classes and this is affecting their ability to learn and make the most out of their education.
The aim is to empower families, by giving them the opportunity to create an income for themselves. Instead of offering them cash, we are providing them with an asset where they can receive a small regular income from the sale the goats milk.
HOW IT WORKS
We provide the materials to build a goat house, primarily to keep the goats safe at night, the family build the house and then we provide the goat. Each family is given one goat that is their own responsibility to care for. For the sustainability of the project each goat remains the property of Rise Africa, so that the families can not sell or eat the goat, but rather they are required to care for the goat and make 100% of the money made from selling the goat's milk.
COSTS
Each goat house costs £135 and a good quality milking goat costs £95, a total of £230 per family.
