The Golden Globe Race 2026 has once again chosen Sheffield's Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) as its charity of choice, continuing its support for world-leading research into neurological conditions.
Golden Globe Race
In September 2026, sailors from around the world will take on one of the most demanding challenges in sport: the Golden Globe Race. Starting and finishing in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, competitors will sail solo and non-stop around the world, covering approximately 30,000 miles and passing through the five Great Capes. In keeping with the spirit of the original 1968 race, skippers will compete using traditional style yachts and equipment, without modern navigation technology or outside assistance.
Before setting off on their solo journey's, all Golden Globe Race competitors will come together on 16 August 2026 for the SITraN charity prologue race, to raise awareness and vital funds for SITraN's pioneering neuroscience research.
SITraN
Based at the University of Sheffield, SITraN brings together world-leading scientists, clinicians and researchers to improve our understanding of conditions including MND, Parkinson’s, dementia, stroke and multiple sclerosis. Discoveries made in our laboratories are developed into new treatments, therapies and improved care that can make a meaningful difference to patients and their families. However, scaling this vital research requires continuous funding.
By supporting SITraN, you’ll:
- Help fund the first site nationally to develop experimental genetic therapies for dementia and MND
- Drive the delivery of a highly promising new stem cell treatment for MS
- Support research into new potential therapeutics for stroke
- Speed up the development of personalised treatments for Parkinson’s, helping to slow—or even stop—how quickly the disease takes hold
