Story
Jesmond Library was built in 1963 when climate change was barely imagined. We're trying to retrofit the award winning Grade 2 listed building to meet current environmental standards - we've already replaced all the reading room windows with double glazing.
Now we need to ensure the library is as air-tight as possible. This is urgent because the original gas heating system is failing. It can't be repaired so must be replaced, but first we need to seal all the places where heat is escaping, so that the new heating system is as economical as possible. We've identified two areas with significant heat loss. One is the roof of the rear admin block, where the fascias need to be repaired and an ill fitting skylight removed. Eventually, solar panels may be sited here. The other area are the eaves around the reading room which need to be insulated and at the same time the exterior lights, long out of use, will be replaced with LED alternatives. This will give the library a much more welcoming appearance at night.
The cost of these two projects is about £40,000. We have secured three grants, but we badly need the help of our members and supporters to get this work started this year.
