The Historical Association is working to raise £25,000 to establish a Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) Teacher Fellowship Programme, a pioneering professional development initiative that will empower teachers to explore, teach, and celebrate the rich and diverse histories of the UK GRT communities. Established in 2015, the critically evaluated Teacher Fellowship programme unites teachers with recent academic research and scholarship and has a strong track record in broadly disseminating new approaches to underrepresented histories across the history curriculum.
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities have long been underrepresented and misunderstood in our curriculum and historical narratives. As a curriculum subject, history equips our young people with the skills and knowledge to foster critical thinking and challenge settled assumptions, helping us to see our world in new ways and to gain insight into the human condition. By supporting teachers with knowledge, resources and confidence, this Teacher Fellowship will help to bring these essential narratives into classrooms, fostering greater understanding, respect and inclusion for future generations.
This programme is being created in memory of Helen Snelson, an inspiring educator who dedicated the later years of her career to championing the histories of GRT communities. She believed passionately that these stories could challenge prejudice and create more inclusive spaces for all students.
As a charity, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to make initiatives like this possible. Your donation will directly support the establishment and delivery of the GRT Teacher Fellowship Programme, ensuring that these important histories are embedded in the education of young people across the country.
Thank you in advance for your support.
