Story

Remember being young and needing somewhere fun and safe to hang out with your friends? Maybe you had a youth club, or were part of the Scouts or Guides.

In Hanham, that space is Hanham Youth Club. It's where young people hang out in the evenings, where they build their community and find their voice.

The future of Hanham Youth Club

Hanham Youth Club is run for young people with the help of young people. It's the busiest youth club in South Gloucestershire: over 400 young people can come through its doors every week.

The building is the house of friendships and love, the house of learning, with failures and successes, the house of fun and growing up.

And, just like every home, Hanham needs to be looked after. That's where you come in. We need your help to keep our space comfortable and inviting for young people. Help us keep Hanham Youth Club the thriving, exciting and life-changing place it's been for young people in Hanham for over 40 years.

Myles's Story

"I have been coming to Hanham youth club for the past seven years. I started when I was in Year 7. I used to be shy -my confidence was very low and I really didn't have a lot of friends.

Coming here has really helped me in my social life. I'm much more confident talking to adults and young people. Unfortunately for everyone else, I'm now a chatter box.

"I started volunteering when I saw that help was needed - I help out with activities, setting up the lights and music and getting everything ready for when young people arrive.

I've been here for five years and it's even helped me get a job at Halfords. I was able to talk about the skills I've learned at club in the interview and apply them in my job role.

"I've been given opportunities to grow here and I'm now keen to become a youth worker in the future. I've been put forward to take on additional training which will mean I'll be able to lead on sessions and take on new responsibilities.

I'm really excited about it and hope I'll be able to inspire other young people to have the confidence to go after what they want. "

- Myles (18)

Despite the success young people have made in their lives through Hanham, we are still struggling to fundraise for our youth club. Maintaining the building costs us £10,000 every year. This is the running cost of putting a roof over our heads. It's the water we need for our cooking, the plumbing for our toilets, the electricity for our music. Without meeting these basic needs, this building wouldn't be a home for young people.
