Help Haller Train Community Garden Leaders in Kenya and Uganda

Campaign by Haller

Haller is partnering with Harvest Food Forest to grow the next generation of community experts in sustainable agriculture. In early 2026, Haller will host Harvest Food Forest’s gardeners for a 12-day intensive training at our model farm in Mombasa.

Haller works with nature to regenerate ecosystems and build thriving communities. In Kenya we equip subsistence farmers living on dry, eroded land with the knowledge to harvest water, rehabilitate the soil and farm sustainably so they can become self-sufficient and generate a livelihood.

Story

At Haller, we believe that lasting change begins with local expertise. For over two decades, we have trained smallholder farmers across East Africa in sustainable, low-cost, climate-smart techniques that restore land, strengthen livelihoods, and build resilience.

In 2026, we are partnering with Harvest Food Forest, an inspiring initiative founded by Sharlene Cohen that is establishing organic school gardens in Kenya and Uganda. These gardens feed students, empower teachers, inspire parents, and offer communities an alternative to harmful, chemical-heavy farming methods.

To scale this work and deepen its impact, Haller will be hosting Harvest Food Forest’s gardeners at our training farm in Mombasa for a 12-day intensive programme in early 2026.

And we need your support to make it happen.

What This Project Will Achieve

Haller will train two gardeners from Amboseli (Kenya) and Rubona (Uganda) in the full range of sustainable agriculture and small-enterprise knowledge that powers our programmes. The training will equip them with:

- Farm planning and management

- Compost pit creation and soil restoration

- Natural alternatives to chemical pesticides

- Effective mulching and water conservation

- Fruit tree and orchard care

- Crop rotation and climate-smart techniques

- Pest management, including rodents and crop raiders

Small-business skills linked to farm outputs

This is a train-the-trainers model. The knowledge shared at Haller will be taken back into schools and communities, multiplying impact across hundreds of families and thousands of children. By strengthening these gardeners, we strengthen entire ecosystems of learning and resilience.

Why This Work Matters

Harvest Food Forest operates in regions where human–wildlife conflict is a daily challenge. Elephants, baboons, and even mountain gorillas frequently raid crops, pushing families toward negative coping strategies, including poaching or clearing land unsustainably.

Organic school gardens offer a hopeful alternative.

- They provide healthy, chemical-free food.

- They teach children and parents new skills.

- They give families income through the sale of produce.

- And they show that communities can thrive without harming their environment.

The momentum is already extraordinary: within just six months, Harvest Food Forest gardens have produced more than 400 kg of food, improved school meals, generated income for school materials, and inspired local farmers to adopt organic methods for the first time.

Demand for this knowledge is growing — and Haller is uniquely positioned to support it.
