Baby Junior is 1 years old and from Dandora slums in Nairobi, Kenya. A local volunteer found him very sick and in urgent need of a blood transfusion.
We rushed him to a local hospital and he was found to have severe anaemia and septicaemia (blood infection) and something was wrong with his hand.
The hospital did tests, put the hand in a cast, gave him a blood transfusion and discharged him after 8 days.
The next day he had severe diarrhoea for more than 24 hours, fever and severe dehydration.
We took him to the nearest hospital and they asked us to rush him by ambulance to a specialist private children's hospital. They suspected the blood loss was being caused by osteomyelitis (deep bone infection) which was causing severe blood loss and need heavy antibiotic treatment and possible surgery to correct. All government hospitals are non-operational due to a doctor's strike in Kenya for over a month. We had no option but to comply. The suspicion was correct.
His mother was at home with a breastfeeding baby and starving with no food whilst the father was in hospital with him. They had spent all their money on his medical treatment. We bought her food.
He has just been discharged after almost a week of treatment, but needs lots of expensive medicines and further treatment to cure the osteomyelitis. His total bill to date is almost Ksh500,000/- (GBP3,000) and we expect it to go higher until the osteomyelitis is cured.
He is now a lot better. This is a photo of the innocent baby smiling whilst his father is looking at the enormous medical bill in desperation. We helped pay it. But he needs more help too.
