THE HEELA PROJECT helping refugee Afghan women in York

An initiative by York CoS to help give the Afghan refugee women of York a voice.

As part of the UK City of Sanctuary network, we promote an environment of understanding and compassion within the city. Funds help our activities which aim to support and welcome people fleeing persecution, poverty, environmental disaster and war, including support for the Ukrainian people.

Story

The HEELA PROJECT (Heela is 'HOPE' in Pashtu) is an initiative by York City of Sanctuary to help give the Afghan refugee women of York a voice. Women from Afghanistan are some of the most vulnerable and oppressed in the world. Having fled the horrors of the Taliban, they find themselves having to navigate the complexities of a new country and culture, often with little guidance.

We are helping the women to form not only a social group that gives them support and much needed visibilty, but also find their independence. This is done through classes and workshops, including digital skills workshops, training for catering qualifiations, cooking opportuniites, and English language improvement.

All donations to the Heela Project go to the women to provide them with classes and additional support that they may need to get ahead.

Thank you
