Every night, while most of us sleep, our rescue fights to save the smallest and most vulnerable lives imaginable. Tiny hedgehogs arrive broken, bleeding, struggling to breathe, hit by cars, tangled in netting, attacked by dogs, poisoned by chemicals, or slowly starving in silence.

Some are so weak they can barely uncurl. Some are mothers carrying babies. Some are tiny hoglets weighing less than a bag of sugar.

And right now, one piece of equipment could mean the difference between life and death for them.

An X-ray machine.

Without one, our team is often forced to make difficult decisions based only on what we can physically see. But hedgehogs hide pain incredibly well. Beneath those prickles there can be shattered legs, crushed lungs, internal bleeding, jaw fractures, infections, swallowed plastic, or pellets lodged deep inside their tiny bodies.

To the outside world, they may simply look “quiet.”

To us, they may be dying.

Recently, a little hedgehog arrived after being found collapsed at the roadside. From the outside there were only small cuts. But after travelling for emergency imaging elsewhere, it was discovered he had multiple fractures and severe internal trauma. Time mattered. Every minute mattered.

Sadly, not every hedgehog gets that chance in time.

The reality is heartbreaking: Britain’s native hedgehog population is declining rapidly. They are disappearing from our countryside, our parks, and our gardens. Yet every single one that arrives through our doors is treated as a life worth fighting for.

This X-ray machine is not a luxury. It is a necessity. It will save lives for years to come.
