Story

Please help us to raise funds that will go towards the build of a special suite for bereaved parents at the Hillingdon Hospital maternity unit.

For most of us going into hospital and having our babies is a wonderful and joyful experience, it's where your memories and your future journey with your new little bundle begins. Sadly for so many families due to circumstances beyond their control, the baby they longed for, planned for, prepared for, will never be taken home.

Imagine being on the labour ward after being given the most devastating news of your life, awaiting a labour and hearing a baby crying through the wall or the sound of a heart beat pounding on the monitor next door knowing that that isn't going to be the outcome for you.

Every day in the UK around 14 babies die before, during or after birth. That means that nearly every two hours a family is faced with the devastation of the death of their baby. There are 3,400 stillborn babies every year. Nothing can make the tragic loss of a baby any better but we can help by improving the surroundings that these families are in.

By building a purpose-built space attached to but separate from the labour ward it would allow families the privacy, dignity & time they deserve with each other and their baby to stay as long as they need and to start to come to terms with their situation.

The proposed suite will have two independent en-suite delivery rooms which would if necessary be able to have direct access to theatres and each room would have space for the partner's bed. There would be a separate family room with a kitchenette. This separation means that the delivery room is a safe space for the woman. There will also be a multi-disciplinary room which will allow space for counselling. The unit will take losses from 16 weeks gestation and onwards and they will be cared for in the new suite. Family will use these rooms to give birth and spend time together with their baby afterwards, providing a private and peaceful space. Each room would have access to its own garden where they could sit any time of year. Each room would be soundproof and have direct access to the car park so that the patient and her family could leave without having to pass through the main entrance, if they so wish.

The building is being paid for by the Hillingdon Hospitals Charity, it is not funded by the NHS. You can take a look at some plans for the suite on this page.
