Story
Hackney Night Shelter provides emergency accommodation every night of the year and support to move on to longer term housing for over 200 people experiencing homelessness each year
"It was my lifeline and I got to get my head together in a safe place" - Michelle*, former guest, a 37 year woman who had been staying in hostels while looking for work after a relationship breakdown and was at risk of sleeping rough when she ran out of money. After staying at Hackney Night Shelter for a few nights she found a job and accommodation.
Another guest was a 54 year old woman who was terrified of sleeping rough when she faced homelessness after a breakup. While staying at Hackney Night Shelter she was able to secure a job. After a few weeks she was thrilled to move on positively to her own place in supported housing, saying " You start to get your life back and its a step in the right direction".
Homelessness has reached record levels in London with more than 13,000 people sleeping rough in 2024/5. Women experiencing homelessness are particularly underrepresented in street count figures because they are more likely to experience hidden homelessness, such as sleeping on buses to avoid the risk of violence and abuse.
We need your help to launch our new women’s shelter in 2026. With your support, we can provide a safe place to sleep and routes out homelessness for over 100 women.
