We Enrich Communities Through Food. We believe in enriching local life through connecting people through community activities and cultivating respect over a bite. Creating social sanctuaries in communities where everyone is welcome to share skills and knowledge. Using food as a connector and vehicle, we can all advocate for change. We are pioneers in fostering relationships in localities, reducing stigma and exclusion. We use a whole community approach to build skills through volunteering and experiential training, serving the needs of the community in a participatory manner.

Story

Help Brixton People's Kitchen provide free activity camps for local children and families in Lambeth.

Founded in 2011, NESTA and Foodism award winners BPK have over a decade of work within food and the community under their belt. Specifically tackling issues of food waste, health and well-being, isolation, and community cohesion.

BPK has brought the community together during every school holiday for the last year. Each day of activities provides children with new, engaging ways to create, stay active, learn, grow and have a good conversation over a nutritious meal.

BPK has consistently responded to the needs of its community in crisis. Lambeth is currently one of the 20% most deprived boroughs in the UK, with about 23.4% (12,295) children living in low-income families. With child obesity at an all-time high, we are seeing the first-hand the effects of food insecurity and ill health. It is reported that 23.8% (665) of children in year 6, are classified as obese or highly obese. As the cost of living continues to rise, we expect that the situation will only get worse.

To help tackle this, BPK will host 30 children and their parents across multiple days throughout the Easter holiday, to provide children and their families with a safe space to come together, cook, create and play.

These holiday clubs give children the chance to take part in a range of fun creative, and educational activities such as arts and crafts, dance, and cookery. Those who attend also receive a warm, healthy meal that they would otherwise miss during the school holidays.

However, as numbers grow and funding becomes tighter, we are fundraising to cover the cost of food, the procurement of spaces, sports and arts providers, staff, and fuel.

Here's how your donation could help:

- £5 donation provides a healthy and nutritious meal for a child or young person - including a healthy snack and drink.

- £8 donation provides a child with arts and crafts materials and a fun health and wellbeing activity booklet to complete throughout the holiday.

- £20 donation pays for one hour to rent the local community hall to host our families.

- £125 donation provides 30 children with a programme facilitator/activity provider for the day. (Sports, theatre, music, dance)

One of our regular attendees wrote to BPK and said:

You are really amazing and we love the activities you do for children and their families. Without you, we would struggle to get through the holidays. We love you.

Brixton Peoples Kitchen strives to enrich communities and bring people together through food and through the cultivation of safe spaces that celebrate culture, creativity, play, and community.
