Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Performing a variety of Male Voice music, we typically perform top class concerts within Huddersfield Town Hall and often with world-renowned performers such as Lesley Garrett, Nicholas McCarthy, Cory or Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Brass Bands or other top bands and artists.

Honley Male Voice Choir is a registered charity (charity no. 1158453) based in Honley near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. We teach choral singing to develop our community involvement, as singing is a pleasurable activity, which reduces stress and anxiety levels and contributes to positive mental wellbeing. Performing as part a group also helps overcome nerves and builds individual confidence.

Our charitable objectives are:

(1) To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals; and

(2) To further such charitable purpose or purposes as the trustees in their absolute discretion shall think fit but in particular through the making of grants and donations.

The choir is a community who support one another and feels like a group of friends who enjoy singing. Weekly rehearsals are fun and motivate members to challenge themselves. It is good to know people would miss you if you couldn't make a rehearsal and provides a reminder that you are a valuable part of the community. We achieve our charitable objectives whilst engendering enjoyment and camaraderie amongst our members.

The choir perform many concerts throughout the year raising money for the choir, local and national charities. In recent years, the choir have raised considerable sums for Kirkwood Hospice, Forget-Me-Not Children's Hospice, The Lions Club of Huddersfield, Yorkshire Cancer Research, Alzheimer's Society, HEROES (NHS charity), Marie Curie Cancer Care, Fairfield School, Batley and Platform 1, Huddersfield.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, our musical professionals worked hard to allow us to carry on rehearsing (virtually via Zoom) thereby maintaining the fellowship of the choir.

The choir introduced a support group (under age 70) to deliver groceries, medical supplies or simply chat, WhatsApp groups so people can keep in touch, weekly and monthly newsletters from our Musical Director and Chairman respectively, weekly online rehearsals and fortnightly quizzes using Zoom technology.

We also released several virtual choir recordings. These included "We Rise Again", "Loving Kindness", "Pratty Flowers", "Mary Did You Know?" and a unique piece written by our very own Phil Kirkpatrick called "Get the Jab" which was performed to the tune of "Da Do Ron Ron".

The choir had the honour of being named by Howard Goodall (composer) on the Loving Kindness sheet music (TTBB) as recognition for being the first male voice choir to produce a virtual recording of the piece.

We also completed two ambitious fundraising projects. A huge thank you to everyone who supported the choir's virtual 12-hour 'We Rise Again - Performathon' fundraising event on 5 September 2020 and the three month November 2020 to January 2021 'We Rise Again Match it! Virtual Fundraising Appeal'. These events raised nearly £10,000 for three charities.

In 2021, the choir's chosen 'charity of the year' was Fairfield School, Batley. The school caters for students with highly complex needs including those with profound and multiple learning difficulties, severe learning difficulties and those with multi-sensory impairments. A donation of £541 was made toward the school's pond redevelopment project.

In 2022, the choir's chosen 'charity of the year' was Platform1, Huddersfield. Platform 1 are a mental health and crisis charity helping people with complex needs. They encourage recovery through various activities, allowing people to recover at their own pace and within a safe and non-judgmental environment. A donation of £746 was made toward their excellent work.

In 2023, the choir's chosen 'charity of the year' was once again Platform1, Huddersfield. Donations totalling £2,882 were made toward their excellent work from various fundraising events throughout the year including a sponsored walk, fundraising concert, bucket collections and festive messages in the choir's winter newsletter.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to Honley Male Voice Choir, so it's the most efficient way to give - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
