Therapeutic Horse Riding or Hippotherapy uses the movement of the horse as physiotherapy. As all of the young people in our care spend most of their time in a wheelchair and have difficulties in controlling their limb movements, riding provides a unique opportunity for an exciting physical activity and exercise out of their chair at the same time as helping with posture and balance.
Riders include pupils from Chailey Heritage School and private riding for those in the local community who cannot access riding elsewhere due to their complex needs.
With the new intake of pupils into the school, the sessions are now in such demand that we are having to rotate riders on a termly basis so that we can offer riding to more pupils. We are hoping to run extra sessions as we currently have new pupils on the waiting list, with other referrals in the pipeline.
We do not receive any statutory funding for this provision and must raise more than £50,000 each year to be able to provide this brilliant facility for the young people.
