Story

As we near our 30th birthday more families across Flintshire are needing support.

We all need a little help at times and we are here with a range of services to support families with young children.

Originally established as Delyn and Deeside Home Start in July 1995. We were rebranded in February 2005 as Home-Start Flintshire.

Family quote – The support we have had from HS Flintshire has been life changing. Entry into motherhood was not what I expected at all and with it my sense of identity and confidence disappeared. I cannot thank both Abi, Sarah and all the staff for building me back up and helping me be the mother I imagined to my girls. The weeks Abi came I could breathe a sigh of relief that I would have a friendly face, a listening ear and an energetic pair of hands to help me with the tasks of motherhood that felt unachievable at the beginning. 12 months later I feel both confident and capable and will never be able to express enough how much HS Flintshire improved the first year of my girls' lives. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Home-Start Flintshire believes that children need a happy and secure childhood and that parents play the key role in giving children a good start in life and helping them to achieve their full potential. Home-Start offers a unique service - it recruits, trains and supports volunteers, to undertake the majority of the support. Our dedicated team of volunteers are supported by a small, highly skilled staff team.

Early intervention and support with young children is vital for their development and future life chances. Home-Start Flintshire is a family support charity, co-ordinated from our office base in Mold. We serve the whole community of Flintshire with a bespoke package of support ranging from home visiting volunteers to community groups.

Being a parent is challenging, even more so with the cost-of-living crisis and the lasting impact of COVID-19 and all parents need help at some time. Some of the things Home-Start Flintshire have been asked to support with are :-

Feelings of isolation

Experiencing effects of ill health and/or disability

Difficulties managing household budget

Struggling with mental health and wellbeing

Difficulties managing children’s behaviour

Bereavement

Multiple births

Housing issues

Stress associated with conflict in the family

Volunteers are carefully linked with families by looking at the skills of a volunteer and the needs of a family. This support can then have a positive impact on the family and the volunteer.

“Volunteer quote - Home-Start support their volunteers making them feel welcome & appreciating all that they do. I have been a volunteer for 15 years now & absolutely love it. Most of the families I have helped over these years have had twins & been struggling so it has been rewarding for me to know that I have been able to make a difference in their lives by giving them an extra pair of hands & supporting the parents when they desperately needed someone who they could talk to. I am still in touch with most of these families as a friend now. Becoming a volunteer has also helped me as I have gained more confidence & has given! me a sense of purpose also after my own 2 children had grown up & I went through a difficult time in my personal life. By helping others this helped me too so I would definitely recommend others to volunteer for Home-Start & help families in need.”
