Story
Help fund groundbreaking neurological research, without animal suffering.
In the UK, 1 in 6 people live with a neurological condition, and 1 in 5 will die from one.
Despite their uniquely human nature, most research into brain diseases still uses animals, but often fail to replicate the complexity of the human brain.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of animals endure experiments in British neuroscience labs. Yet this suffering has not translated into better understanding, diagnostics, or treatments for patients.
A new approach to neuroscience
Emerging evidence links microbes in the body to a range of neurological conditions. However, more research is needed to understand how this microbial activity affects the brain’s immune, metabolic, and neural pathways.
By focusing on human biology - from patient-derived models and advanced imaging to computational analysis - scientists can explore these connections in ways that are ethically robust and more likely to benefit people.
The Humane Research Trust is the UK’s largest charitable funder of exclusively animal-free medical research. The charity is launching a new initiative, which will fund a UK-based research project to study the link between neurological conditions and the microbiome.
