Eye Matter was founded in 2018, by visually impaired Suzie Simons, who appreciated the need to provide support and opportunities for people living with sight loss. Unlike many charities, Eye Matter is predominantly run by volunteers including the board of Trustees, most of whom are registered blind. A great team of sighted guides and other volunteers support the many different projects Eye Matter offers. In 2024 Eye Matter members attended more than 40 in person outings including to audio described theatre, art galleries, museums, comedy clubs, concerts and accessible sports events.
Eye Matter has over 400 members across the UK who have access to a multitude of free activities online via Zoom, including concerts (by visually impaired performers), Zumba, Chair Yoga, audiobook club, poetry appreciation, creative writing and much more. Sight loss can be traumatic at any age which is recognised within Eye Matter by the provision of "Living Well With Sight Loss" courses, "Turning Surviving Into Thriving" sessions covering the grief of sight loss, a mental health blog and unwavering peer support.
Members are also invited on annual holidays to Sicily and on PGL adventures where members can throw axes, abseil, build rafts, try archery and much more.
