Story

The Islip Big Bike Ride

From Westminster Abbey to Islip through royal parks and country lanes, the Islip Big Bike Ride is a unique and beautiful 70-mile route from central London to the ancient village of Islip in Oxfordshire, the birthplace of Edward the Confessor.

Starting outside Westminster Abbey, our riders will pass through Hyde Park and the Georgian splendour of Holland Park. Emerging near Wembley they tackle Harrow on the Hill and emerge from London directly into the beautiful, rolling, Chiltern hills. With the woods and winding lanes behind them, the route takes the Phoenix Trail, an old railway line converted to a cycle path, across the Oxfordshire plain to Thame, and then its just a short hop to the finish at Islip Village Hall.

Funds raised will be distributed equally between Dr South's School and St Nicholas' Church, both in Islip.

Not everybody is a long-distance cyclist, and so we offer shorter routes from Great Missenden (30 miles) and Thame (15 miles).

The Big Bike Ride welcomes those who cycle regularly as well as those looking simply for a fun family day out. If you would like to participate then click here to register.

Friends of Dr South's School

Dr Souths C.E. School is a small but thriving village school of around 100 pupils founded in 1710. It is a focal point for the community and has educated children from Islip and the surrounding villages for generations.

Dr Souths strives to provide a rich education to its pupils, with a wonderfully broad and varied curriculum that will give them the very best opportunities for the future. As a small school, the core school budget is very limited and money raised from fundraising has a huge impact on the education that it can provide to its pupils.

The Friends of Dr Souths School is a UK registered charity (number 279172) that has been raising funds for the school for many years.

Funds from previous Big Bike Rides have contributed towards a fantastic variety of activities and resources for the school, including new laptops, specialist IT tuition, visiting science workshops and exciting outdoor play equipment and markings.

The school is currently raising money to buy wooden staging and lighting to use for school productions. These productions give all pupils a chance to work as a team, build self-confidence, learn to speak in public and improve their singing and performance skills.

St Nicholas' Church

St Nicholas, the parish church of Islip, dates back to the 12th century and its striking tower is a visible landmark for miles around. The church today is the centre of the villages spiritual life for weekly worship, major festivals and also for other important community occasions such as Harvest and Remembrance. The well-tended churchyard is an important pedestrian link as well as a beautiful and peaceful place where anyone in the village is entitled to be laid to rest.

The church is also a place for community gathering and hospitality. Frequently used for concerts, we also host occasional evening events where villagers and others can meet and mingle. The church has been used as a recording and rehearsal venue for classical musicians, for the local secondary schools Christmas carol concert and as a venue for sales and other events that raise funds for overseas causes.

The demands of maintaining and enhancing an historic listed building take considerable funds. Our ambition is to continue to develop this wonderful and important place to be of continuing relevance, service and spiritual help to the community. Our current big project is the repair and upgrade of the lighting to be more effective, energy efficient and flexible. The funds of the Big Bike Ride will help considerably with this.
