Story

New Malden Spire

The United Reformed Church Spire, which has been a key part of the skyline of New Malden since 1881 is in urgent need of repair. Some 60 years ago it was thought to be a good idea to cover the stonework in concrete to protect it. This has proved fairly resilient until now, but cracks have allowed water to get in, and when this freezes, it can force the concrete off. This happened when a section of concrete fell onto the roof of the church.

The cost of the repairs is around £100,000, and the congregation is planning various events to raise money to save this important feature in New Malden. A 12 hour sponsored piano play by the Minister's wife, Judith Flint, is taking place on Saturday November 23rd from 7.00am to 7.00pm. You are invited to call into the church during that time and listen to the piano being played. There will be a relaxed atmosphere so bring a paper or book to read, have some refreshments, make a donation.
