This July marks a heartwarming milestone – it will be 10 years since Sunny the donkey was born here at the sanctuary.
Sunny’s story began in Norfolk, where his family was rescued after being found abandoned in a field. His mum, Olive, was pregnant at the time, and on a beautiful sunny day – July 28, 2015 – she gave birth to Sunny at the sanctuary, inspiring his cheerful name.
From the moment he arrived, Sunny captured hearts. Visitors adored him, and on his very first birthday, he received over 250 cards from our amazing supporters.
Now, as Sunny approaches his 10th birthday in 2025, we want to celebrate in a big way – and we’d love your help to make it unforgettable.
To mark this milestone, we’re creating a new enrichment area – a fun and stimulating space for Sunny and his companions to enjoy every day. Here’s what we hope to include:
- Mirrors – donkeys are fascinated by their reflections!
- Extra-large salt licks – to support their health and keep their senses engaged.
- Treat balls – because every birthday needs a tasty surprise.
- Jolly Balls – robust toys perfect for playtime.
- A sandpit – ideal for rolling, playing, and embracing the donkey life.
While Sunny’s beloved mum Olive has sadly passed, his dad Blakey and sister Barbara are still with us, and we know they’ll enjoy this new space just as much.
With your support, we can create a lasting tribute to Sunny’s first decade – one that brings joy, play, and enrichment to him and his friends for years to come.
Please help make Sunny’s 10th birthday truly special.
