Trinity Hospice and Brian House Childrens Hospice

Jack's 12 Wishes of Christmas

Hello, I'm Jack! I've been coming to Brian House Children's Hospice for a while now. I have 12 wishes this Christmas and each one will bring love, care and fun to all the kids who come here. But, I need your support to make these wishes come true.

Story

I'm Jack Leech.

I'm 16 and I come to Brian House for care. I have a condition called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy which makes my muscles weaker as I get older. My mum is my main carer
and I need a lot of help to do most things in my life these days. As I've grown up and got heavier its become much harder for her to cope; and I know how tired she gets. I know that she also worries about my future too.

That's why Brian House is so important to both of us. I go to the children''s hospice in Bispham once every month or so for a couple of nights. Its always great fun when I go, and I've got a few mates who go there too so we always try to book our visits at the same time. When I'm there, we stay up late, watch DVDs on the big-screen TV and play the PlayStation (without being told to go to bed!).

My medical condition really restricts what I can do each day. But I've still got so many things I want to achieve in my life I just need a lot more help than other kids. Brian House is where I get that help. When I'm there I know all my care and medical needs will be looked after. All the nurses are great, and we do have a laugh (I'm known as something of a practical joker around here, but don't worry they always get me back!). But its also important that my Mum gets to rest and that shes not worrying about me. And its all completely free, Mum doesn't have to pay anything for the activities and trips they organise, or any of the fab food they have.

I am just one of more than 90 kids that Brian House cares for, from teenagers (like me), all the way through to teeny babies. Outside the hospice, I think people see my condition and my disability first. But what I love at Brian House is that the nurses don't see my wheelchair or my complicated care needs. To them, I'm just Jack.

This year I wanted to help Brian House, to give something back for my care and to help the other children I meet here to have an amazing Christmas. So, I talked to the nurses and together we came up with my own version of the traditional 12 Days my own 12 Wishes for this Christmas. The first 11 are the things all of us at Brian House can't wait for treats and surprises that will make Christmas this year our best ever.
