Story

This August I will be cycling from Lands' End to John O'Groats (LEJOG), just over 1000 miles in 13 days. I am doing this to raise money for Into University, a great cause that supports young people aged 7-18 in disadvantaged areas.

I have never undertaken anything like this before, but love getting out on my bike, including cycling to work from my home in Wylam. I have been fitting in as much training as I can between work and family commitments and recently completed C2C Whitehaven to Tynemouth 140 miles (see photos), so if successful in the summer I will have ridden the length and breadth of the country.

I have always wanted to take on the LEJOG challenge and like many people the pandemic made me think about seizing the moment and making time for the things which are important. I wanted to raise funds for a cause that made a real difference. I have lived and worked in the North East for most of my life and I have seen the difference that education can make, but also the barriers that stand in the way of many to realise their potential.

In my current role as PVC Engagement & Place, I am fortunate to have worked with Into University, an organisation that provides free after school support for young people aged 7-18 in disadvantaged areas. We have recently established a centre in the East of Newcastle based in Monkchester Community Centre. They offer a safe space for young people to learn, explore and succeed, a welcoming and supportive home-from-home, located in their neighbourhood that can help them achieve their dreams.

It is particularly poignant for me because Laura Duncalfe, the inaugural centre manager was tragically knocked off her bike and died in January 2022. So, I will be riding with her in mind in addition to promoting and raising money for the brilliant work in which she invested so much.

Thank you so much for your support, it truly means a lot.
