Story

It’s June 2021, we are still under the shadow of Covid-19 and under certain lockdown restrictions. Male unpaid Carer and Carer Support South Lakes Volunteer, Stuart Graves decided to walk from Keswick to Kendal and asked some of the men he helps through his Male Carer Support Group to join him as a relay (keeping within Covid guidelines).

Stuart, who is a dedicated advocate for unpaid Carers, knows first-hand the challenges that Carers face, especially during times of crisis. As the founder of this annual event, his aim is to shed light on the struggles of Carers, particularly the often-overlooked male Carers, who quietly bear the weight of their responsibilities.

Reflecting on the last few years, marked by unprecedented challenges and lockdowns, Stuart emphasises the importance of human connections. For the Male Carer Support Group, accustomed to regular face-to-face meetings, the sudden limitations imposed by the lockdowns became not just obstacles but potential sources of isolation for its members.

Carer Support South Lakes, a charity dedicated to supporting unpaid Carers (currently 1460) plays a crucial role in Stuart's life. As a full-time male Carer, he volunteers for the Charity and leads their Men's Support Group, providing a lifeline for those who need it most.

The K2K walk serves as a poignant symbol of solidarity, a collective effort to acknowledge and address the hardships endured by Carers. Men and women from all walks of life, will embark on this journey to amplify the voices of those who care selflessly for their loved ones, often without respite.

The chosen date for this remarkable challenge, situated between National Volunteers Week and National Carers Week, holds particular significance. It gives us a chance to celebrate the hard work of both Carers and our volunteers, some of whom will be helping us on the day.

All funds raised through this challenge will support us to continue providing targeted services to unpaid Carers throughout the South Lakes.

To male Carers who may be hesitant to reach out, Stuart extends a heartfelt invitation to join the Men's Support Group. Understanding the tendency to wear masks and hide true feelings, the group provides a safe space for men to share their experiences and find strength in solidarity.
