Working with over 11,000 people with a sight impairment in Kent and surrounding areas, we’re one of the largest local sight loss charities in the UK. Our aims are to work to prevent avoidable sight loss, deliver excellent support services and help people to live independently.

Story

The MESS ROOM art groups began nearly 20 years ago when artist Wendy Daws started volunteering with the Kent Association for the Blind. Today, the MESS ROOM partners with KAB to provide creative spaces for visually impaired artists.

With over 30 years of combined experience, MESS ROOM Artists collaborate across sectors—with schools, community groups, and partners—to raise awareness, provide training, and mentor the next generation of MESS ROOM advocates. As professional artists, they also develop unique commissions, curate exhibitions, and organise cultural events that promote inclusivity, equality, and the extraordinary talents of our participants.

In 2025 the team are fundraising to make improvements to the MESS ROOM, including new and more suitable flooring.

“I feel so happy right now, I’ve had such a great morning in the MESS ROOM, I always feel so inspired hearing about everyone’s ideas. This is my favourite part of the week, making art and being with friends!” - Peer Arts Participant
