In 2022 our supporters generously funded two new classrooms, toilets and taps for Kala School in the remote Makwanpur district of Nepal. However, when we visited in September 2023 to see the finished school, we discovered a serious problem.
For several months a year, the school was cut off from the community by a fast-flowing river. Not wanting to close the school, teachers were carrying children across the river on their backs. We crossed the river ourselves, and it was quite deep with a very strong current.
We have worked with the local authorities to develop a proposal for a new bridge. Local people are willing to donate land, and there will also be a community contribution. The 86m bridge will cost £30,000 and we have committed to raising £25,000 of that total.
As well as connecting the school, the local community will also use the bridge as a new way of travelling between villages all year around. The local community consists of 51 households, all of whom rely on agriculture and livestock to make a living.
Thank you for helping us build a bridge so that the children of Kala School can have an education all year round.
