SHOCC aims to raise funds for and awareness of projects that challenge deprivation and poverty. It is the organisation that brings together all the university's charitable work with local and global communities. It funds the building of schools overseas and supports the work of charities in its local area.

Story

St Charles Lwanga is a High School in Kampala, Uganda, led by the inspirational Mr Ssaazi Benedict. The number of students on roll in March 2020 was 308 but as of Feb 2022 only 187 had returned. Some students have found employment, others have married or had children, whilst some parents are reluctant for their children to return to school instead of helping the family.

There are strong connections between St Charles Lwanga and the UK. Mr Ssaazi Benedict visited Somerset and London in 2015, supported by the Geographical Association, and his school is linked with schools in Somerset. The GA International Special Interest Group has worked with Benedict on a variety of projects and he was also part of the team contributing to the RGS supported project exploring the extent to which Uganda had achieved the Millenium Development Goals.

We hope to raise funds to support St Charles Lwanga in providing educational opportunities for young people in Kasubi, Kampala post-Covid. Help is needed to purchase essential chemicals for science classes, to help renovate the school site, to enable broken equipment to be repaired and to encourage school staff and pupils after two very challenging years of Covid lockdown.

Benedict has recently e-mailed us with the following news:

Much help is needed to buy laboratory chemicals as most of our stocks have expired and cannot be used for practicals. Desks and tables are broken and need to be repaired or replaced. We have to consider urgent renovation of parts of the school building and we need to cover staff salaries and pay rent arrears. We currently face a marked reduction in pupil numbers from 308 pre-Covid days to 187 on reopening".

We would be delighted if you were able to make a donation. Catherine Owen turns 50 in March 2022 and would like people to support this fundraising effort as part of her celebrations. Why not make a donation to Kasubi your birthday present to Catherine?
