Let’s get Kayleigh to Nepal

One of our long-term young people, Kayleigh, 15, has been successful in her application to head to Nepal to support teaching English and expand her view of the world. As a valued member of The BHY we are keen to support her to get there.

Our vision is that Blackpool and the Fylde Coast is a place where young people are leading their best lives by developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours to become key-players in the places where significant decisions are made in our organisation, across society and in their own lives.

Story

Kayleigh has been accepted to travel to Nepal as a Year 11 student at her school. Kayleigh’s family have acknowledged the amazing opportunity this would be for her but also the prohibitive cost associated with making it possible. 🇳🇵

As a long-term and valued member of The BHY we are keen to support her fundraising efforts to get her there. Kayleigh has ambitious plans to become a paediatric medical professional (which we have no doubt she will achieve!) and this will be a tremendous experience for her. It’ll also look so good on her uni application! 🎓

Students will have the opportunity to explore Kathmandu and its colourful bazaars, street life and many temples providing varied and vivid impressions that will stay in their memories for a lifetime. Another main element to this trip is the visit to Chitwan National Park where we will be able to track rhino, ride elephants and possibly catch a glimpse of a tiger! 🐅

The third and most rewarding element is the opportunity to help in community teaching project at Shubhakamana School in Kathmandu.

Students will be able to meet local children and work side by side in a project that will affect the future of their lives. Our students will be teaching conversational English in small groups - this is all planned for prior to the trip. The personal development and growth that comes from volunteering for something like this is simply amazing. During our work at Shubhakamana, the group will also have the opportunity to carry out some home visits to some of the children that are sponsored by past UK students and teachers to see where the children live and get to experience their home life first hand.

We know that students benefit from such an experience in many ways.

Culturally, they have the opportunity to witness first hand a lifestyle that could not be further removed from ours in the West. Educationally, they will be able to access geographical, historical and religious information from their hands-on experience as well as train beforehand to be able to teach conversational English to speakers of a foreign language. The most rewarding part of this trip, however, will be from a personal development point of view, all members of the group will share a rare experience that will help shape further views and attitudes in our community.
