This September Keefe Owen will be undertaking an epic challenge to raise money for the work of Scripture Union Cymru. He will be taking on the Trans – Cambria Mountain Bike challenge! Travelling around 200 hundred kilometres, with over 4000 metres of climbing (four times up Snowdon!), this off-road wilderness route is not for the faint-hearted. It travels from the English border at Knighton, across and up the mountains of Mid Wales to finish at Dovey Junction by the Irish Sea. This is a tough, wild and self-supported challenge passing through one of the most remote areas of Wales. The challenge requires a high level of physical and mental endurance along with good navigation skills and wilderness experience. Many parts of the route also follow in the footsteps of ancient Christian pilgrims who walked over these mountains to sacred worship spots many hundreds of years ago (the first pilgrims are recorded in Wales as early as ad500). One of these is the ancient ‘Monks Trod’, which linked the 12th century abbeys of Cwm-Hir and Strata Florida. Not only are parts of this route following in the footsteps of pilgrims that went before, but it also traverses an area of Wales where, despite this rich Christian heritage and past revivals, this area is now one of Wales' most unreached.
As a teenager I grew up in rural Mid-Wales and it was this experience of isolation as a young Christian that led me to later train as a missionary. It is on my heart to see the work of SU expand into these areas. For me, mountain biking this route is especially meaningful as God has allowed me to use mountain biking over the years to connect people with the gospel in rural areas.
It is recommended that the route takes experienced riders three to four days to complete. Keefe will be attempting this challenging route over three days.
Keefe would be most grateful if you would consider sponsoring him and pray with him as he does this immense physical and mental challenge.
