KHULA Education works with 21 schools in a deeply rural and under-resourced area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We run pre-schools, offer top-up teaching programmes focused on Maths and English, provide educator development and mentoring support, and have a life skills and job-readiness programme.

Story

This Easter, KHULA Education is raising money to build a small kitchen where our housekeeper can prepare two meals a day for our 80 little learners at Rorke's Drift Pre-School.

Nutrition during school years is crucial for the mental, physical, and psycho-social development of children and yet it is estimated that, across Africa, 23 million school-aged children go to school everyday hungry. School feeding schemes alleviate hunger, improve school enrolment and attendance, increase academic performance, and contribute to gender equity in access to education. For most of our learners, they are their main source of food security.

We hope to build a small kitchen where our housekeeper can prepare our own meals each day, will mean that the only hunger our students experience is the hunger to learn.

We know that our own kitchen means we can produce a more reliable cadance of meals of a good quality. We want to offer all children in our care a quality education, and that starts with making sure they enter the classroom well fed and able to learn and have fun!
