Story

Story

In 1968 Tony Brown, Harvey Sheldon and their team of archaeologists found a remarkably well-preserved Roman pottery kiln in a substantial Roman pottery manufacturing site in Highgate Wood.

The kiln is the only Roman pottery kiln in Greater London to have been lifted and conserved, and was stored in the cellars of Bruce Castle Museum hidden from public view. The charity Friends of Highgate Roman Kiln (FOHRK) was established to bring the Highgate kiln back to the Wood where it was made and exhibit it in a secure setting as the focus of an exciting learning programme in heritage and crafts.

Thanks to generous donations and a generous grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Roman kiln is back in the Wood and on display. Our programme of research and outreach has been so successful that we now want to expand it beyond 2024 beyond the plans funded by our National Lottery grant

Help us raise funds to:

🔥 study Highgate Ware found further afield to investigate possible other kiln sites

🔥 create a protective structure over the replica kiln and hold further experimental firings in the future

🔥 expand our community outreach programme

FOHRK is a registered charity, no. 1177405.

About the charity
