Story

“St Andrew’s Children’s Society changed our lives for the better 25 years ago. They offered us strength and support when we were very sad and hopeless. We have never looked back and our two wonderful children aged 16 and 22 make us happy every day. Cannot thank the whole team enough for everything they have done for us all. Best decision we have ever made was making our family through adoption.”

A 2022, 100th anniversary quote from one of our adopters

“It has all been a bit manic here, as I am sure you can imagine, so I am sorry it has taken so long to reply.

First day of School went really well and she seemed to do great; however, it did all kick off later, which seemed to stem from her not wanting to be away from me, which we are taking as a big positive, despite the trauma of the evening.

We would be happy to add some words for any application you are making but we may need some guidance to what you are looking for.

"During the adoption process, nothing can prepare you for the "FULL ON" experience it is to take a neglected child into your heart and your home. You want to love them and care for them but they are, unfortunately, in a never ending struggling with emotions, so strong, that they can barely contain themselves from minute to minute and you are, as a parent, on tenterhooks waiting for the next trigger to set them off.

I am not sure how we would have managed to get through the first month, or so, without St Andrews help, support and guidance and even during the worst of the Covid-19 lockdown, they were available at a moments notice, on the phone, on skype group calls as well as arranging video calls for moral support and family thera-play sessions. The selfless support from this organisation is priceless, as is the dedication of its highly trained and intuitive staff and we can honestly say that without them we, would probably not still be going through the process."

Many thanks for all your help and support Rita* and the team (* Adoption Support Manager)

St Andrew’s Children’s Society is an independent adoption agency working from centres in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, providing services throughout west and east central Scotland and up to the Highlands. We welcome adopters from the broad spectrum of society, regardless of ethnic origin, religious persuasion, or sexual orientation. After a thorough preparation and successful rigorous background checks, the approval as adopters will lead to the placement of a child. We are Scotland’s specialist agency for the placement of sibling groups, children with disabilities and those severely affected by the trauma of neglect and abuse. Our aim is the successful outcome of adoption through well-developed adoption support. Instead of traditional parenting techniques, adopted children require a style of parenting which is more sensitive to their emotional needs. Adopted children’s early experiences mean they can often struggle with relationships and day-to-day life. Their early needs have often gone unmet, and all have experienced some form of loss or trauma. Many have suffered abuse or neglect; all have been separated from their birth families and have spent time in the care system. This leads to a small percentage of adoptions disrupting because of those unresolved relationship difficulties between the adopted child and their adopters who frequently develop a sense of feeling overwhelmed by their child's distressed behaviours.
