Story

Kit's Fund for Wilms Tumour Research is a Special Named Fund at CCLG: The Children & Young People’s Cancer Association raising funds for research into Wilms tumour.

Kit was eight years old when he was diagnosed with Wilms tumour. His dad, Johnny, shares his story…

Kit had just recently celebrated Christmas and his 8th Birthday, when we noticed signs that something wasn’t right with his kidneys. Following various checks and scans he was diagnosed on 20th February 2025 with kidney cancer, known as Wilms tumour.

He had a large tumour in his left kidney which needed immediate chemotherapy, surgery and then further chemotherapy. Kit was quite poorly initially and spent most of the first 6 weeks in hospital, but following his surgery he recovered well and spent most of the time at home, going to Dundee every Monday for chemo until October 2025.

Unfortunately in January 2026 we discovered that Kit’s cancer had not been entirely cured and had started to regrow in his liver. We began a new course of treatment involving stronger chemotherapy, longer hospital stays, stem cell transplant and radiotherapy. As we reach the end of this second round of treatment Kit is coping extremely well with a fairly gruelling regime of medicines, prods, pokes, scans and hospital stays. We still have some treatment to go and an uncertain road ahead. Kit will have regular scans to check for any remaining cancer and, due to the toxicity of the chemo and radio therapy, he will also need lifelong heart, liver and kidney health checks.

Despite everything Kit is has remained full of life and faced the challenge with impressive resilience, remaining energised and cheerful, making everyone smile, including himself. We have focussed on a healthy diet and lifestyle to help his body cope and recover, this has helped him bounce back after each treatment and means we’ve been able to enjoy lots of extra family time together.

Kit is raising money for research into Wilm's Tumour with CCLG so that more children like him can be treated and recover fully from cancer. Being diagnosed with cancer as a child is inexplicable and life-changing. Treatment is improving all the time and with your support research can increase the survival rate and reduce the side effects of treatment. We wanted to take a positive action during a difficult time and use our life challenge as a force for good.
