Story

Kito is 13 years old.

For a while, the streets had more to offer him than home did. Not because he wasn't loved, but because love alone couldn't always put food on the table.

His parents are separated and unable to care for him. Instead, it is his grandparents who have stepped in, opening their home and their hearts to a boy they love deeply, despite having very little themselves.

Earlier this month, after months of faithfully walking alongside Kito in the local juvenile remand centre, listening to his story, building trust, and preparing for the day he could safely return home, our team had the privilege of reunifying him with his grandparents.

Kito had been placed there after being found begging on the streets; a place no child in need of care and protection should ever end up.

Together, they began the journey back to his grandparents, back to his community, and back to the hope of a different future.

Back to his grandparents.

Back to his community.

Back to the place where hope can begin again.

When our team asked Kito about his dreams for the future, he didn't ask for much.

Kito simply said he wanted to go back to school and join Grade 6, just like other thirteen-year-old boys in his village back home.

That request might sound simple.

But after more than 21 years of walking alongside vulnerable children and families, we know that getting a child home is only the beginning.

The poverty that pushed Kito onto the streets hasn't disappeared.

The experiences that shaped his childhood have left wounds that need care, healing, and support.

The family still needs support.

Relationships still need rebuilding.

His future still hangs in the balance.

That's why our work doesn't end with reunification.

It begins there.

Every week, our local Social Care Team continues to visit Kito and his grandparents. They are helping the family with the practical steps of returning him to school, supporting them emotionally through the challenges they face, and praying with and for them as they seek healing, restoration, and hope for the future. They are patiently building relationships with his father, who isn't yet ready to play a role in his son's life, while continuing to walk alongside the whole family with compassion, consistency, and love.

Our Social Care Team fights for the safety, protection, and restoration of children within families every single day. They walk alongside children, advocate for their needs, and keep showing up until families are stronger and children are safe.

Felix, one of our incredible Social Workers, shared this with me:

"I will continue communicating with the whole family and other community members, including the father, so that together we can work out the best plan for Kito."

Those words capture the heart of SAFE.

No quick fixes.

No headlines.

Just faithful people, quietly showing up, day after day, until a child is safe, a family is stronger, and hope begins to take root.

This morning, I checked in with Felix again.

He was with Kito's grandfather, helping him take the next steps towards getting Kito back into school.

One child.

One family.

One future being rewritten.

Because every child we reach, one by one, counts.

This Summer we have launched this urgent summer appeal, Known by Name.

We invite you, our community of supporters, our brothers and sisters in Christ, to prayerfully stand with us and help ensure that children like Kito don't simply survive, but have the opportunity to grow up safe and loved within family, receive an education, experience healing, and discover the future God intends for them.

But the reality is that our work never pauses.

Almost every week, our team receives new referrals for children who desperately need help.

A name arrives on a referral form.

A phone call comes in.

A teacher raises a concern.

A government office asks if we can walk alongside another victim of abuse.

Every referral is more than a case.

It’s a child with a name.

A face.

A story.

A future.

And every time a new name reaches our team, we want to be able to say "yes."

Yes, we'll visit that family in crisis.

Yes, we'll search for the girl who has gone missing and bring her home safely.

Yes, we'll help that child begin their journey of trauma recovery.

Yes, we'll stand beside them for as long as it takes.

Our prayer is that every child whose name reaches us will be Known by Name. Not simply recorded, but truly seen, kept safe, and lovingly supported.

Together, we've discovered something remarkable.

Across everything SAFE does, from urgent support that helps bring children to safety, to the ongoing work of strengthening families and the long term transformation of care systems, we have calculated that, on average, £37 helps us reach one more child each year. It means that when a child's name reaches us, we can respond with the practical, emotional, and spiritual support they need, walking alongside them from crisis towards safety, healing, and hope.

Behind every referral is a child waiting to be seen, supported, and known by name, and we want to be ready to respond.

Referrals continue to arrive.

If you are prompted today, would you prayerfully consider making a gift now?

Whether it's £37 to help reach one child, £185 to help reach five children, or whatever you are able to give, you will be helping us continue walking alongside the children already in our care while making it possible to say "yes" to the next child whose name reaches us.

Because every name matters.

Every story matters.

Every child matters.

Together this summer, we can ensure more children are Known by Name—seen, safe, supported, and surrounded by the love of family.

Thank you for believing that every child deserves to grow up in a safe and loving family.
