Story
Rosie came to AHAG for housing support when her relationship ended, and she became homeless. Rosie was sofa surfing with her dog, not an ideal solution and not a long-term option.
Charlotte, AHAG support worker and Rosie sat together to work through her housing options, Charlotte explained that due to her age, Rosie would be offered lower rate of housing related benefits towards her rent should she find a private rental due to her age. Private renting can also prove challenging when you have pets.
Armed with this knowledge, Rosie went away and discussed her options with her family who suggested that they take care of the dog until Rosie was in her own accommodation and that perhaps supported living might be suitable for her in the interim.
Charlotte and Rosie made applications, a set back from one supported living unit came when they assessed her needs as too high for the support they offer. Understandably difficult news to hear for Rosie.
Again, with the support and encouragement from her family and Charlotte, Rosie agreed to apply for another supported living unit and continued to sofa surf in the meantime. Waiting lists can be long, often months before accommodation becomes available due to high demand on housing providers.
We are happy to report that Rosie has now moved in, is settling well and looking forward to her visits with her much loved pet until they can be reunited.
Rosie is just one example of #homelessness. Our data shows that Rosie is 1 of *164 individuals who became homeless due to a relationship breakdown.
