Ward Manager, Dee Ayles explains more: Although all of the staff work very hard to make patients and their families feel comfortable and welcome it would be fantastic if they could have a space which was just theirs. Dee goes on "We have been thinking that the ideal solution would be a family room which would also incorporate a small kitchen as it would bring so many benefits".
"Firstly it would allow patients and family members just to be together outside of the ward environment to sit and watch television and catch up as a family. This would have such a positive impact on the patients mental well-being. Having a kitchen would also be ideal as patients who are with us a long time often have altered dietary needs and a space where they could enjoy a warmed up home cooked meal would be wonderful. In addition the kitchen could also help us with assessing, from an occupational health viewpoint, whether a patient is capable of looking after themselves and are safe to go home".
With a major refurbishment of Elm Ward being planned during the coming months, LHCH Charity thought this would be the ideal time to provide the Family Room which is so needed. The Family Room will cost just under £20,000 including building works.
