The library windows are a stunning feature of our beautiful Grade 2 listed building. But environmental concerns were not at the forefront of public consciousness in 1963. The Friends have already taken steps to reduce our energy use - we have double glazed the upstairs windows, fitted cavity wall insulation to the two storey back section and insulated the roof. But the windows in the main room are a much bigger challenge as they form an integral part of the circular exterior wall. There is no doubt the work needs to be done - many windows are cracked or crazed and the metal frames are corroded so that our heating bill is much bigger than it need be, putting more pressure on our slender finances. We've already replaced 3 pairs of windows in a pilot project last summer, funded by the Suez Community Trust, so we know it can be done successfully. Now we hope to replace the remaining 18 pairs of windows, in three phases. We really need your help to achieve this. Its going to cost us over £40,000 for each phase so anything our supporters can contribute will be vital and help us to leverage more grants. The Friends would like the Library to lead the way in making Jesmond a greener place to live and work. As well as the environmental benefits, the project will make the Library a warmer, pleasanter place to spend time in, and help to protect the long term future of this heritage asset to the city.
