Prior to the pandemic, poverty was already entrenched in the East End. Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham ranked as the 2nd, 3rd and 7th highest nationally for rates of poverty, with 50% of children and older people living below the poverty line. In addition, Newham and Tower Hamlets have the highest level of unemployment in London. These issues have been compounded by the Covid crisis, which has shone a spotlight on the disadvantage and inequality that exists in our society. The voluntary sector locally is well placed to address these issues, and thanks to our supporters, we are confident that by offering higher value grants over a sustained period, we will improve the Life Chances of local people.
