The impressive tower and spire of Aston Parish Church are a significant landmark. Due to recent changes in standards the lightening conductor must be improved. Without this the spire is at risk. Historic England has made a generous grant but not for all the costs. This grant has to be spent by Christmas hence we made an immediate start on the job. Steeplejacks climbing the 200ft high spire in winter is not an easy job but work is progressing.
Is the tower worth saving? We and Historic England think so. It is one of the oldest structures in Birmingham. It was completed in 1480. 540 years is a long time ago. To help visualise how long that was ago the king was Edward IV a Yorkist and America had not been discovered by Christopher Columbus. The structure was 150 years old when Aston Hall was built, you could have stood on the tower and watch the builders at work.
