Story

Our synagogue is a wonderful, outstanding and important Grade One Listed synagogue in Liverpool’s Princes Road, built for the enjoyment of both worshippers and visitors. Our building is a legacy for the future of Jewish community life, and also one for the City of Liverpool.

Visitors often describe it as a "hidden gem". Our interior is acoustically excellent, a great concert venue for both performing and recording and also a suitable space for exhibitions, small conferences and lectures as well as our religious services

We are doing important fund raising to sustain the work of synagogue and we appeal to you to help us so that you can be part of keeping the building alive, purposeful, safe and welcoming.

I am one of the 4 Trustee members of Princes Road Synagogue. We are a Registered Charity called Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation

The decline in membership subscriptions means that we no longer bring in sufficient income to meet our running costs. The plan below requires a period of transformation of up to 5 years resulting in us being better able to raise funds on our own through our tours and events. Our aim is to become self-funding, although we will still need to apply for heritage grants for the upkeep of the building.

Your help towards running costs is vital to help sustain us through this critical phase. Without it we will reach a point where we will not be able to pay our costs and we will be forced to close and leave the building to decay.

What we do at the moment:

• Weekly Sabbath and festival services

• Tours to schools and the public

• up to 3 Cultural Events per year, run by our team of volunteers

• Educational Events - lectures, discussions

• Interfaith Events

Our Vision for the future

• To become a key Jewish heritage centre for interfaith education and local community support. These things are needed now more than ever to promote more understanding and tolerance.

• To give people the opportunity to learn more about the ethical and humanitarian teachings of Judaism

• To liaise with local and city communities to match shared needs and seek shared opportunities

Our Plan

• Enlist your funding and support with meeting our running costs to carry us through this transitional phase

• To broaden our charity's aims towards architectural heritage and education for all, as well as being a place or worship

• To recruit a number of gifted and skilled people onto our board of trustees

• Apply for a Heritage Lottery funding to:

⁃ Conserve and maintain the building

⁃ Hire staff to develop and run our educational events and tours

⁃ Make adaptations to the building to be better able to provide public events and activities, such as new and accessible toilets, and facilitating access for all.

Please let your network of contacts know about our campaign.
