Honoring Freedom, Inspiring Unity: The Story Behind Our Juneteenth Walk
On June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free. This day, now known as Juneteenth, marks a powerful turning point in American history and a reminder that the fight for justice is ongoing.
At Lake Land College, we believe in honoring this moment with action, education, and community. That’s why we created the Juneteenth Walk—a campus-wide event inviting students, faculty, staff, and community members to walk together in reflection and celebration.
A Walk with Purpose
A walk has long been a symbolic gesture associated with Juneteenth, and we are proud to not only emulate this tradition but to support our Lakers while doing so. In participating together, we can unite toward building a more inclusive and informed campus culture, as well as taking real action to remove barriers to success for our students. Along the route, participants can encounter historical markers, student reflections, and moments of silence that prompt deeper understanding.
