Jacari provides free English language tutoring for children and young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds in Bristol and Oxford. Our amazing volunteer tutors support them to improve their English language skills, increase their confidence and access an education.

Story

Jacari is a small charity with a big impact! We've been providing educational support to children and young people from migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking communities for over 65 years.

What we do

We provide free tutoring, trips and activities for over 250 pupils who use English as an additional language every year, operating in both Bristol and Oxford.

How your donations will help

By donating to Jacari, you’ll be helping us match pupils who use English as an additional language (EAL) with a volunteer tutor who can help them increase their confidence and English language skills, access an education and fulfil their potential. Most of our volunteers are university or sixth-form students, and as young people themselves, act as a role model and mentor for their pupil. The positive relationships that form between our volunteer tutors and their pupils are key to unlocking potential.

Who we support

The children and young people we support are a wonderfully diverse group, representing many different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The thing they have in common is that they speak English as an additional language and their school teachers know that they would benefit from the extra support we offer - perhaps because they lack confidence, are struggling at school, or have just arrived in the UK and are new to English.

Why we do what we do

Over one in five children in state-funded schools in England speak English as an Additional Language (EAL) – 1.77 million pupils. This number is increasing, and has more than trebled since 2000. Despite this, the majority of dedicated expertise and support for EAL pupils has disappeared from the education system, with funding no longer ring-fenced, meaning schools are unable to provide the extra support many EAL pupils require to develop English and access an education.
