Oasis Hub Youth in Action
"Having you as my mentor made a bigger difference than you’ll ever know" -Sasha, 17
Young people make better choices when they’re in healthy relationships with friends and trusted adults participating together in safe impactful community spaces. This was true for Sasha. Her schoolteachers noticed that she had started to struggle with her confidence ahead of her GCSEs. When they spoke to her about it, Sasha explained she was struggling with friends, and because her mum was busy, she didn’t have anyone to explore college options with. She was worrying about failing, not having a plan and felt hopeless.
Despite the hard work of their parents, most of the young people we work with come from low-income families and struggle to gain access to enriching extracurricular activities. Oasis Hub Youth is a lifeline for those young people and their families.
Every young person can participate and benefit from a range of accessible programmes with Oasis Hub Youth. Mentoring, youth clubs, group sessions, competitive football teams, developmental trips out of London are some of their options. The welcome, care, support and value on offer are the same whether you’re being mentored or in our football team. Our service is like a stick of rock – wherever you start or stop – how it makes you feel and the impact it has is the same. Sasha noticed this.
Through meeting weekly with her Hub Mentor, Sasha grew in confidence, devised a revision plan, visited colleges and built healthier and trusting relationships with peers and adults.
Some of our young people who are benefitting from our services want to give back to their friends and communities by taking part in our great adventure this July. We are aiming to raise £20,000 which will keep our life changing services going for 150 young people every week for another year.
Sasha is now passing the stick of rock onto others. Within two months, Sasha was mentoring younger teenagers and had a conditional place in college, after viewing it with her mentor. Sasha’s Mum was grateful for the support and Sasha’s teachers were impressed with her renewed engagement in school.
