Story

London is a bustling, vibrant and multicultural city with over ten million people that live, work and travel within its reach.

London Search and Rescue (“LonSAR”) and London’s Air Ambulance ("LAA") are two charities that work tirelessly to keep Londoners safe across the capital.

LONSAR searches for vulnerable missing people across London to help end preventable loss of life. Working with the Metropolitan and City of London Police, we provide a 24-hour search and rescue service. LONSAR’s volunteer search professionals are selfless, dependable, trustworthy, courageous, and compassionate. Our team are committed to high standards through constant training and improvement and, coming from communities across London, reflect the diversity of the city we serve. The most common incidents involve vulnerable individuals with mental health issues, dementia, despondency, or those facing suicide risk.

LAA is the charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to London’s most seriously injured patients. Using a helicopter from 08:00 to sunset, and rapid response cars at night or in adverse weather situations, London’s Air Ambulance brings the hospital to the patient when time is critical. They perform innovative and potentially life-saving procedures on-scene that are usually only delivered in the emergency department. The team, consisting of an advanced trauma doctor, paramedic, and consultant on most missions, can perform treatments such as open heart surgery, blood transfusions and general anaesthetic by the roadside. By providing intervention as quickly as possible after injury, they aim to give patients the best chance of survival, and best quality of life, after trauma. The most common incidents they attend include road traffic collisions, stabbings and shootings, falls from height and incidents on the rail network.

LONSAR are a relatively young charity looking to continue their growth and raise £15,000 for their operating costs; whereas LAA face a different challenge, looking to raise £15,000,000 to replace the two helicopters in their fleet in the coming year. Both these aims are mission critical for keeping Londoners safe.

The LONSAR team are undertaking the Bridge to Bridge Walk across London, walking over 50 kilometres, crossing all 26 Bridges within the area covered by the Met Police (from Kingston-Upon-Thames to Tower Bridge). No mean feat.
