Story

I am thrilled to be able to bring to the forefront for my term of office, two charities which could not be closer to my heart. One of a very personal family level and the other which has been a part of my many and varied working life occupations. I have seen first hand the incredible work that both these charities do and the difference of even the smallest intervention that can be achieved.

Bowel Cancer West - My Husband, Colin is a bowel cancer survivor and we are delighted to help this amazing charity to raise awareness and funds for their much needed research and support programmes. At our lowest point Jon and his colleagues at Bowel Cancer West have been there supporting us all the way through this journey, they have helped with information, support and encouragement and his treatment team would not have been able to treat him so successfully without the ongoing research that this charity funds and provides. It is vital that, and even if it is the least we can do, is raise awareness of this hidden disease. Bowel Cancer is the UKs second biggest killer as far as cancer is concerned then I have helped perhaps a family member or you with the incredibly difficult task of starting the conversation. Why are we so embarrassed talking about bodily functions after all it could save a life of the someone you care about so please help us raise much needed funds.

The NSPPC because I have seen at first hand the damage done to young people who have been sexually, physically and mentally abused. For many years I worked in the child advocacy arena and became very aware of the expertise, care and services that this amazing charity offers. It is estimated that over half a million children suffer abuse or neglect each year but this is and should be preventable. As life becomes more pressured and we all experience the difficulties and hardships of a pandemic, many more children and families have been hidden away suffering in isolation and fear. As we start to cautiously emerge from this, it is critical that programmes such as their Together for Childhood project is accessible to all who need it. This is a long-term project working in all types of communities bringing hope and the possibility of greater safety for children within those communities through education by understanding of the root causes and instigating prevention before the harm starts. The NSPCC is working hard in my City, creating opportunity for families and young people to join together with all sorts of services, information and assistance givers to offer specialist assistance to families and young people facing what may seem to them to be insurmountable challenges, offering them opportunities to find a way to thrive and succeed. The NSPCC helpline is in many cases a life-saving, life changing free service for young people but needs funding.

We all are aware that donations all but disappeared for many charitable organisations irrespective of their existing profile during the pandemic. As we take small steps to live with the consequences of this pandemic, I am asking for your help to support these two amazing and very different charities. It is more apparent now than ever, that their services are much needed in their sectors please help us to help these two incredible charities continue their incredible work.
