With The Asia Foundations network of 18 permanent country offices across Asia and our longstanding relationships with local partners, we've been able to identify urgent needs and mobilize quickly in response to what we're seeing on the ground and to get resources where they're most needed." Lotus Circle funds are fuel funds that allow The Asia Foundation to support programs that advance women's and girl's empowerment in Asia. When the pandemic hit, Lotus Circle funds enabled immediate action to respond to the urgent needs of women and girls, and to support women and communities at the frontlines of COVID-19 response.
The Asia Foundations annual Lotus Leadership Awards will take place virtually on April 28, 2021. Viewers will gather to celebrate outstanding individuals and organizations that have made major contributions to women's and girl's empowerment and gender equality in Asia. The 2021 Lotus Leadership Awards will honor Eileen Fisher for her commitment to women's economic empowerment and leadership through her company's and foundations work, and Women in Need (WIN), a partner of The Asia Foundation in Sri Lanka for nearly four decades, whose work to end gender-based violence and increase women's access to justice in Sri Lanka is unparalleled.
Proceeds from the Awards Gala will go to our Lotus Circle Fund, which provides vital support to projects that address women's rights and security, including the dramatic increase in gender-based violence during the Covid-19 pandemic, advance women's economic empowerment and girls education, and amplify women's voice and leadership in Asia and the Pacific.
$500 allowed a woman-owned Cambodian tech company to expand marketing on their online platform that connects women textile artisans who had lost income with buyers and markets.
$625 funded construction of a handwashing station in Timor-Leste for women accessing essential services to protect themselves from COVID-19. In total, 24 handwashing facilities were built outside domestic violence shelters, crisis response centers, and other key service providers.
$1,000 supported 9 vulnerable Indonesian women to ensure their family's and neighbor's food security during the COVID-19 crisis by planting and harvesting healthy crops.
$2,500 provided 500 young Pakistani children with educational kits so they could continue learning at home during COVID-related lockdowns.
$5,000 funded a 24-hour counseling hotline for Mongolian women entrepreneurs that gave advice on how to pivot their businesses while providing psychosocial support to those in need. 280 calls were fielded over three months - double the usual volume.
$10,000 ensured that seven dynamic Lao college students could continue their education after universities temporarily closed; each scholar received a laptop and internet credit, virtual support from trained counselors, English and STEM tutoring, and soft skills trainings.
