Our beautiful little boy Luca is aged 3 from Neath in South Wales. He has faced more challenges in his young life than any child should have to. Luca has a rare TUBA1A tubulinopathy and lissencephaly, alongside quadriplegic cerebral palsy and complex epilepsy. He is currently immobile and needs a huge amount of support with his everyday life.
Luca struggles with excessive secretions and regular chest infections, which have previously resulted in hospital stays. Since starting weekly private intensive therapy, we have seen a real improvement in his chest infections, and that progress has given us so much hope. Luca also requires daily suctioning and sleep studies, and he experiences big seizures. One particularly serious seizure resulted in a 10-day hospital stay, and at one point Luca had four hospital admissions within just one month.
Despite everything he faces, Luca continues to surprise us.
Recently, Luca had the incredible opportunity to trial the Trexo robotic walking system for five days. Seeing him take steps and experience supported walking was absolutely amazing. To watch your child move their legs and take steps alongside their siblings, when you have previously been told they may never walk, talk or sit, is something we will never forget.
Luca is already making progress with his supported sitting, but he needs intensive therapy and specialist equipment to help him reach his potential.
The Trexo could be life-changing for Luca. It gives him the opportunity to practise a walking pattern repeatedly and safely, while supporting his body in ways he cannot yet manage independently. Sadly, the Trexo costs approximately £54,000, and Luca also needs other specialist equipment and ongoing therapy alongside it. This is far beyond what our family can afford on our own.
Walking is something many of us naturally take for granted. For Luca, taking even a few supported steps is an incredible achievement.
We want to give Luca every opportunity to experience movement, therapy and the possibility of becoming more independent. We want him to be able to move alongside his brothers and sisters and experience the joy of something that most children get to do naturally.
