Lucy Wisdom Fund

Set up in memory of SOS's Founder Lucy Wisdom, donations to this fund will help us continue her life's work of protecting Sumatran orangutans and their precious forest home.

Northern Sumatra’s rainforests are irreplaceable. They are some of the most important forests on the planet, home to rare Tapanuli & Sumatran orangutans and other precious species. Supporting thousands of forest-edge communities, these ecosystems are key in the global fight against climate change.

Story

Lucy Wisdom brought colour and passion to everything she did, above all to the Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS), the charity she founded, and which became her life's work. She fostered SOS's growth from a one-woman campaign to a small but vital international agency, whose work allows wild orangutans the chance to thrive in the forests of northern Sumatra.

Lucy sadly passed away on 19th December 2009, but her organisation, SOS, has continued tirelessly in its mission.

Donations to the Lucy Wisdom Fund are used to advance the mission of SOS through securing land in Sumatra for wild orangutans, providing scholarships for the next generation of Indonesian conservationists, and supporting the Lucy Wisdom School, built on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park.

Lucy was once asked 'What's so special about orangutans?' Her reply:

On a human level, what first captivated me was how you could descend into their eyes and experience a very deep connection. They are our cousins, part of our evolutionary tree, and in some ways part of us.

Helen Buckland, Director of SOS, says:

It was her illness that brought Lucy to Indonesia, where she fell in love with the rainforests, the people, and of course, the orangutans. She went on to use her passion, dedication and joie de vivre to create an organisation which continues her lifes work all these years later. I think Lucy would be so proud of the impact that SOS is having. SOS is today recognised internationally for its valuable contribution to the conservation of the Sumatran orangutan and the Leuser forests. Lucys endless dedication to orangutan and forest conservation was an inspiration to so many people, and we at SOS are proud to continue the work she started.
