Story

Maggie's Swansea is turning 9!

Wednesday 9th December 2020 marks 9 years since the Maggies centre, Swansea opened its doors.

When a person is diagnosed with cancer, there are many questions that need answering. How do I tell my family? What will I do about work during my treatment? Whilst medical teams based in NHS hospitals focus on giving the best possible medical care, they simply do not have time to answer all of the overwhelming questions that come when you are told you have cancer. At Maggies we do.

Maggie's Swansea is a local charity that provides practical, emotional and social support to Men, Women & Children with cancer, their families and friends, across South West Wales. We offer a range of support including benefits advice, children's counselling services, bereavement support, cancer specific support groups, nutrition advice and post-treatment courses.

It costs £590,000 to keep the centre open for a year. We rely solely on the generosity of our supporters and receive no funding from the government or NHS. Every penny raised stays in Swansea centre and helps us to continue supporting people with cancer, their families and friends across South West Wales.

A donation of £50 means someone whos just been told they have cancer will get immediate support from one of our trained Cancer Support Specialists. Someone like Craig.

Craig first came to the Maggies centre in Swansea in 2016 after being diagnosed with advanced multiple myeloma.

He told us: 'If Maggies hadn't been there at the point where I really needed that support I think that me and my partner, my family and my 6 year old son would have not known how to approach that absolute bombshell. '
