Can you help improve the future of the harvest mouse? Classified as Near Threatened with extinction (Red List), the tiny Harvest Mouse needs your help! Were embarking on a multi-year project to build our knowledge about this tiny animal and deliver a plan to secure its future. Your donations will help to build a community of Harvest Mouse Heroes who will be a key part of this plan increasing our knowledge and informing the delivery of better protection for harvest mice. Lets work together to give the harvest mouse a brighter future!
On the Red List for Britains Mammals, the harvest mouse is classified as Near Threatened in Britain. This means that they are at risk of becoming threatened with extinction in the near future. Worse still, harvest mice are classified as Critically Endangered in Scotland and Vulnerable in Wales, indicating a high risk that this species could go extinct in the wild within these countries in the next 10 years. The problem is, we do not have any reliable estimates of how many harvest mice actually exist in the wild, so we really have no idea how bad their fate really is.
The harvest mouse is an important indicator of the health of an ecosystem and integral part of the environment, especially in farmland and potential declines are thought to be caused by changes in habitat management and agricultural practices.
This is why weve launched the National Harvest Mouse Survey! We need to understand more about where this species is found across the United Kingdom and how many there are. Were relying on a community of volunteer Harvest Mouse Heroes to go out and search for harvest mouse nests to help us understand how this species is doing in the wild, and to create a strategy for how best to help them.
If we dont survey and create the plan now, it is possible that this species could disappear from under our noses!
