Story
Pendle Community Hospital in Nelson provides inpatient intermediate care and medical beds; providing medical and nursing care to patients with long-term conditions and a rehabilitation service for people following illness or injury.
The Marsden Olympics is a transformative event, inspired by the Invictus Games and the Paralympics, created to bring hope and joy to stroke patients. Life can be challenging after suffering a stroke but with a adaptation and support, it can still be fun and fulfilling. The games were designed to focus on a host of rehabilitation modalities to incorporate physical, cognitive and communication skills.
Through creative and engaging activities like paper plate discus for coordination, bowls to support visual scanning and hungry hippos adapted for wheelchair users, the team have seen incredible progress in patients.
Last year, the Marsden Olympics had an astonishing impact - patients who were previously disinterested in therapy became eager participants, with some achieving remarkable milestones. 20 patients progressed to a facilitated stand and three patients took their first steps post-stroke.
The atmosphere during the games is electric, with patients waking up excited to cheer on their teammates and enjoy the friendly competition between the nursing and therapy teams.
This online donation page will enable the team to use charitable funds to further enhance the therapy service for patient benefit.
